The talented Jenson Brooksby takes on third seed Diego Schwartzman in the round of 16 of the ASB Classic on Wednesday.
The Argentine star was supposed to take part in the inaugural United Cup event. However, an injury caused him to miss it and Francisco Cerundolo replaced him in the team.
So Schwartzman will be playing his first tournament of the year in the ASB Classic in Auckland. He received a bye into the round of 16 and will play his first match of the season against Brooksby. Schwartzman had a great start to 2022 as he reached two finals and one semifinal in the first four tournaments he played. The 30-year-old will hope to start 2023 on a similar note.
The 22-year-old is also playing his first tournament of the season. He had an exhilarating clash in the round of 32 against Fabio Fognini in the ASB Classic.
Fognini won a tight first set but the youngster bounced back strongly and came out victorious with the score at 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-3. The match saw a few heated exchanges. One such instance was when Brooksby managed to win a break point to make the score 1-2 in the third set. The ball kissed the net and that bamboozled Fognini. Players usually apologize when they win a point after a net cord. However, Brooksby did not do so and that irked the veteran.
Diego Schwartzman has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline as of now. He defeated Brooksby in Antwerp in 2021 in straight sets.
Prediction: Diego Schwartzman to win in three sets.
