7th seed Sebastian Baez takes on America’s Ben Shelton in the round of 32 of the 2023 ASB Classic on Tuesday.
The Argentine youngster did not have a memorable start to the season in 2023. He played in the Tata Maharashtra Open that recently concluded.
The 22-year-old lost in the round of 16 to Pedro Martinez after receiving a bye in the first round. Baez won the first set but couldn’t capitalize on the lead. The Spanish star won the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Baez also took part in the doubles event. He teamed with Luis David Martinez and lost to the top-seeded team of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. Baez had a better start to his campaign in doubles at the event as he and David Martinez defeated French duo Fabien Reboul and Sadio Doumbia in straight sets.
The 20-year-old will also be playing his second tournament of the season. He could not make it to the main draw of the Adelaide International 1. Shelton lost to James Duckworth in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 in a qualifying match, and that ended his campaign in the tournament.
The southpaw has had a great start to his professional career. He turned pro last year and won three Challenger titles. Shelton also broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career. He is currently placed at No. 92.
Ben Shelton and Sebastian Baez have never faced each other as yet. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Sebastian Baez to win in straight sets.
