The world No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas locks horns with world No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz in what promises to be a mouth-watering quarter-final clash in the Astana Open on Friday.
The Greek tennis pro suffered an upset defeat in the first round of the US Open against Daniel Elahi Galan. He was a part of the star-studded Team Europe at the Laver Cup. Tsitsipas defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-2, 6-1 in his first match before losing to Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-7 (11-13), 8-10 in the second.
The 24-year-old began his campaign in the Astana Open with a relatively comfortable win against Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. In the round of 16, Tsitsipas faced 19-year-old Luca Nardi. The Italian youngster gave a good account of himself and took Tsitsipas to the limit in both sets. However, the former world No. 3 got the win 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3).
The 25-year-old came was ousted in the second round at the US Open. However, he came back strongly at Metz 2022 and progressed to the semi-finals, where he lost to eventual champion Lorenzo Sonego.
The Polish star took on Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the first round. Hurkacz bagged the first set without much fuss and showed good temperament to win a closely-contested second set. In the round of 16, Hurkacz defeated another good player – Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 6-2 in favor of Stefanos Tsitsipas. Their last encounter was at the quarter-finals of the 2021 Miami Open where Hurkacz came from behind to win the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Prediction: Hubert Hurkacz to win in three sets.
