Aston Villa Opinion: Why the Villans should go all out to sign Tom Bayliss?
According to a report from The Sun, Aston Villa are battling West Ham for Coventry City midfielder Tom Bayliss. (h/t Coventry Telegraph)
The 20-year-old has been a standout performer for Coventry City over the past two seasons. He scored three goals and contributed three assists in 38 appearances in League One this past season. And now a host of Premier League clubs are hoping to snap Tom Bayliss, who is under contracted at the club until 2022.
The report claims Coventry City value Bayliss around £3million. With that in mind, Aston Villa must attempt to beat West Ham to the young midfielder’s signature.
The Villans produced an incredible run during the second half of the campaign to seal promotion through the play-off final. And Dean Smith has wasted very little time in strengthening his squad ahead of the new season, bringing in Jota from arch-rivals Birmingham City last week. The newly-promoted Premier League outfit have also clinched the permanent deal of Anwar El Ghazi from Lille.
Now the Villa boss should shift his focus towards bolstering the midfield options, with the release of veterans Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan weakening the squad a bit. The departures of Jedinak and Whelan was a step in the right direction, but it’s imperative to bring in suitable players to replace them this summer.
While John McGinn, Conor Hourihane and Jack Grealish are solid first-team players at Villa, Smith needs to add depth to his squad which will be crucial in tackling the rigorous demands of the top-flight. Thus, the signing of Tom Bayliss will make a lot of sense.
Bayliss is easily one of the most promising players in League One, after putting in a series of fantastic displays for Coventry City this past season. He has already made over 70 appearances for the first-team, which speaks volumes about his maturity and game understanding at such a tender age.

A central midfielder by trade, the 20-year-old can also feature on either wing or at either tip of a diamond. He is an impressive ball carrier and uses his distribution skills to pick his teammates. Bayliss works really hard in the middle of the park, which will make him perfectly suited to Smith’s style of play at Villa Park.
Verdict
The England U19 international has plenty of potential and could be a future first-team star in Villa colours. And at around £3million, Bayliss would be a fantastic long-term investment.
