Aston Villa were heavily linked with a move for Brentford skipper Romaine Sawyers in the January transfer window, with the Daily Mail claiming that Dean Smith wanted the midfielder for £4million.
Romaine Sawyers, 27, has featured regularly for Brentford this season, supplying six assists in 36 games. He has shone as a skipper, taking the responsibility of leading his team admirably well this campaign.
It is difficult for Smith and co. to achieve direct promotion but they certainly are now one of the in-form sides in the Championship.
There are no guarantees of the Midlands outfit winning promotion to the Premier League but Smith certainly can start planning for the 2019/20 campaign. With or without promotion, it’s clear Villa need reinforcements and the manager’s priority has to be offloading the deadwood and replacing them with fresh and young talents.
But it’ll be interesting to see if Villa succeeds in keeping hold of Jack Grealish, with the midfielder linked with a host of Premier League sides. Grealish has been in red hot form of late for Villa but if he leaves ahead of next season, Smith must look to bring in someone of his calibre.
Romaine Sawyers would be perfect at Villa Park having already proven himself in the Championship, thanks to his versatility, creativity and silky dribbling skills. The 27-year-old has played as a wide midfielder and in different positions across the midfield but he has shone in a more central role this season.

A central role has allowed the St. Kitts and Nevis international to dictate the tempo of games, break attacks and create chances for his teammates in the final third. As well as being given the captain’s armband, the former Walsall man has shown that he can take the responsibility of leading the side, thus endearing himself to the Griffin Park faithful.
Having signed Sawyers at Brentford on a free transfer from Walsall in 2016, Dean Smith should look to bring the creative midfielder to Villa Park when the transfer window re-opens. Sawyers certainly has the right attributes to make a name for himself in the Aston Villa side.
