Why Aston Villa must make a move for Millwall winger Jed Wallace

Back in December 2019, the Express, via HITC (h/t The Birmingham Mail) had claimed that Aston Villa were interested in signing Millwall’s Jed Wallace. However, no deal materialised during the January transfer window and he stayed put at The Den.

Jed Wallace, 25, graduated from Portsmouth’s youth sides and spent four years at Fratton Park before moving to Wolves in 2015. He made just 18 League appearances for Wolves and spent two loan spells at Millwall before joining on a permanent deal in 2017.

The 25-year-old winger has enjoyed a solid season in the Championship, racking up 10 goals and eight assists in 35 appearances. Wallace has been one of the bright spots for Millwall, who are currently eighth in the table.

Meanwhile, it has been a woeful campaign for Aston Villa in the top-flight. They only won promotion last year by defeating Derby County 2-1 in the playoff final but have struggled to match up to the quality of Premier League teams.

Dean Smith’s side are 19th in the table and face a possible relegation threat. However, they still have 10 matches to play and it remains to be seen whether or not the Villans manage to beat the drop.

After managing to win just seven games so far, Smith desperately needs to bring in some quality players this coming summer. Despite signing over a dozen players in the last two transfer windows, the fact that Villa haven’t managed to perform well tells exactly why they need to improve their recruitment policy.

There are a lot of players who have failed to deliver the goods this season, leaving the club teetering in the relegation zone. The Villans have netted only 34 goals in 28 games. They have had problems scoring goals this term, with Wesley Moraes failing to live up to the lofty expectations of the Villa Park faithful before damaging his knee ligament.

El Ghazi and Trezeguet have contributed to just seven goals, which is a poor return considering the quality they possess. Having said that, Smith should revive his interest in Jed Wallace to bolster his options in the wide department.

Wallace has taken some significant strides towards fulfilling his potential at Millwall this term and has surpassed his last season’s tally of five goals and two assists. He has enjoyed the best season in his career and Aston Villa getting their hands on the Millwall star before the start of 2020/21 campaign should be a big boost.

Verdict

Villa clearly have a dearth of quality attackers and Wallace will be a top fit at Villa Park. At 25, he is entering the prime stages of his career and the Villans reviving their interest in their former target would be a wise choice if they wish to improve their performances next season.
