Casper Ruud and Andrey Rubley battle it out on Saturday for a spot in the championship round of the ATP Finals.
Casper Ruud
The 2022 US Open runner-up comes into the semis with a 2-1 record. He sealed his spot with back-to-back wins to begin the tournament before losing to Rafael Nadal in his last group game.
Ruud had an impressive start to the tournament with a relatively comprehensive win against Felix Auger-Aliassime. The third-seeded Ruud managed to edge the first set in the tiebreaker and finished the job in the second set to win the match 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Ruud followed this win with another solid performance against Taylor Fritz. The Norwegian had to dig deep in the third set to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). Against Nadal, Ruud couldn’t bring his best game. The veteran broke Ruud’s serve once in each game to win the encounter 7-5, 7-5.
Andrey Rublev
Like Ruud, Rublev also qualified for the semis with a 2-1 record. This is the first time in three attempts that the Russian youngster has made it to the semis at the ATP Finals.
Rublev got off to a good start with a come-from-behind win against Daniil Medvedev. The 2021 US Open champion won the first set but Rublev showed his class in the following set and leveled the scores. In the decisive third set, Medvedev couldn’t hold his nerves as the sixth-seeded Rublev secured a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-7 (7-9) win. In his second match, Rublev faced the mighty Novak Djokovic. The 21-time Grand Slam champion made light work of Rublev and won the match 6-4, 6-1. In a virtual quarterfinal, Rublev took on Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek athlete won the first set with ease but Rublev once again made a strong comeback to win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 4-1 in favor of Rublev. Ruud got his first and only victory so far against Rublev in their most recent encounter at the group stage of the 2021 ATP Finals in three sets.
Prediction: Casper Ruud to win in three sets.
