Second seed – Stefanos Tsitsipas will lock horns with fourth seed – Daniil Medvedev in a crucial group-stage encounter at the ATP Finals on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old has won two titles this year and will look to finish the season on a strong note with a deep run at the ATP Finals.
His road has only got tougher after he lost his ninth consecutive match against Novak Djokovic in his opening fixture. With this loss, the hopes of the Greek athlete finishing the year at number one came to an end. Tsitsipas’ serve was broken in the first set itself and that set the tone for the Serbian legend. Eventually, the match ended 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in favor of the 21-time Grand Slam champion.
Like Tsitsipas, Medvedev has also won two titles this season. However, the similarity doesn’t end there. Both players are in need of a win as they lost their respective first matches in the competition.
The former world No. 1 began his campaign against Andrey Rublev. Medvedev had a 4-1 lead in the head-to-head scoreline going into the match. However, that did not count for much as Rublev proved to be the better man on the day. Medvedev hit 24 aces compared to just 8 from Rublev but the latter did not let that perturb him as he won the close match 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 7-3 in favor of Medvedev. Tsitsipas won their last encounter in the semifinals of the 2022 Western & Southern Open in three sets.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
