The German veteran Anna-Lena Friedsam locks horns with lucky loser Erika Andreeva in the round of 16 of the 2023 ATX Open on Thursday.
Before coming to the ATX Open, Friedsam played in the Linz Open. She made it to the main draw after progressing from the qualifiers. Her campaign ended in the quarterfinals where she lost to 8th seed Anastasia Potapova.
In the round of 32 of the ATX Open, the 29-year-old faced Dayana Yastremska. Friedsam picked up a relatively comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win over the young Ukrainian. The experienced campaigner converted 3 out of 6 break points while she herself got broken only once.
The 18-year-old lost to Laura Jeanjean in the second round of qualifying in the Merida Open last month. She has managed to progress from the qualifiers in the ATX Open as the lucky loser.
In the first round of qualifying, Andreeva went on to defeat You Xiaodi after dropping the first set and saving a match point. The match ended 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. In the second round, Andreeva couldn’t get past Ashlyn Krueger, losing the match 6-1, 5-7, 1-6. Andreeva played a thrilling match against Harriet Dart in the round of 32. The match ended in 3 hours and 32 minutes with Andreeva winning 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Erika Andreeva. She defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam in straight sets in the round of 32 of an ITF event in Germany last year.
