Austin Hooper Early life and college career

Hooper attended De La Salle High School in Concord, California, where he participated in football after leaving Pine Valley Middle School in San Ramon, California, and graduating from St. Raymond School in Dublin, California. He chose Stanford University to play college football and was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com. Rivals and ESPN both labeled Hooper as a defensive end, with ESPN rating him as a four-star recruit and the nation’s #261 player overall, regardless of position.

Hooper participated in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2014 after redshirting his first year at Stanford in 2013. He had 40 receptions for 499 yards and two scores by the season’s end. Hooper had 34 receptions for 438 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore in 2015, including a career-high 79 yards and a touchdown in a victory against then-number-six USC. He was also the finalist for the John Mackey Award, and First-team All-Pac-12.

NFL Career

Hooper was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft (81st overall). After Hunter Henry of Arkansas, who the San Diego Chargers took in the second round, he was the second tight end chosen (35th overall). Levine Toilolo, a former colleague of Hooper’s at Stanford, was welcomed back into the fold.

Hooper was only surpassed in receiving yards by All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones at the halfway point of the 16-game 2017 season. Hooper completed the 2017 campaign with a total of 49 receptions, 526 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns.

Going into the 2018 season, Hooper was still the Falcons’ primary tight end. In Week 2’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers, he recorded his first season-long receiving touchdown. He had a career-high 10 receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown in Week 11 against the Cleveland Browns, but the team still lost. With 71 receptions for 660 yards and four scores, he had a successful season.

Hooper contributed to the 26-9 victory in Week 10 of the 2019 season against the New Orleans Saints with four receptions for 17 yards and a score. Hooper strained his MCL during the victory and missed the following three games as a result. In Week 16’s 24-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hooper hauled in seven catches for 82 yards. Hooper was selected to play in his second Pro Bowl as a stand-in for 49ers tight end George Kittle on January 20, 2020. Hooper had a total of 75 receptions for 787 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns at the end of the 2019 season.

Hooper and the Cleveland Browns agreed to a four-year contract on March 20, 2020. A $10 million signing bonus is included in the $44 million deal’s value. In his first season with the Browns, Hooper ended the regular season with 46 receptions for 435 yards and four touchdowns. Hooper caught seven passes for 46 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets in the Wild Card Round against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

For the Browns, Hooper started the season as their starting tight end. He had 38 receptions for 345 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns by the time the 2021 season was up. Hooper got released by the Browns on March 17, 2022.
