Italian No. 2 Camila Giorgi takes on Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on Thursday.
Camila Giorgi
The 31-year-old has been dealing with a lot outside the tennis court with the fake vaccination scandal but she will have to keep her focus on the game as much as possible.
Giorgi did not have a great time at the Adelaide International 2. She lost her first qualifying match against Sorana Cirstea. At the Australian Open, unseeded Giorgi took on 2021 French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The match turned out to be a one-sided affair as Giorgi won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. The Russian star had a disastrous time with her serves as she only had a win percentage of 29 on the first serve. Giorgi finished the match in just 55 minutes to start her Australian Open campaign with a bang.
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova
The Slovak tennis player participated in an ITF event in Australia, earlier this month. She crashed out in the round of 32 following a loss to Lesia Tsurenko.
Karolina Schmiedlova won three qualifying matches against Irina Khromacheva, Jessika Ponchet, and Elizabeth Mandlik to get to the main draw of the Australian Open. In the first round, the 28-year-old got the better of 21st seed Martina Trevisan in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Schmiedlova won 52 points and out of them, 22 were won while receiving.
