Austrian GP 2022: Red Bull driver Max Verstappen will start on pole position for the Sprint Race on Saturday after setting the fastest lap in qualifying.
Max Verstappen managed to grab his third pole position of the season as he set the fastest lap of Qualifying on his final Q3 lap at the Red Bull Ring on Friday. The Dutchman was under pressure from the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz towards the end of Q3 as both the Scuderia drivers bettered his initial effort before two red flags halted proceedings. Verstappen set the fastest lap of the qualifying session with a 1min 05.852sec lap just before the chequered flag.
The two red flags were caused due to Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell crashing out towards the final segment of qualifying. Both the Mercedes drivers are likely to take grid penalties if they are to get new power units/ gearboxes installed for the sprint race on Saturday.
Leclerc will start tomorrow’s sprint in 2nd place, alongside Verstappen in the front row and ahead of his teammate Sainz. Sergio Perez will start in 4th place, the Red Bull driver wasn’t too pleased with his outing and was looking for a spot on the front row.
Nevertheless, Red Bull and Ferrari will be hoping to take maximum points from the spring tomorrow ahead of the main race on Sunday. The top 8 will be awarded points for the Sprint.
Here’s a look at how the top 10 will line up for the Sprint tomorrow at the Austrian GP (barring any grid penalties for Russell and Hamilton):
- Max Verstappen
- Charles Leclerc
- Carlos Sainz
