Chelsea player ratings: Who impressed for the Blues in 0-0 West Ham draw?

Chelsea dropped their first points of the season as Maurizio Sarri’s men were held to a 0-0 draw against West Ham United at London Stadium. West Ham defended with a lot of character to leave Chelsea visibly frustrated as the Blues failed to penetrate.

The Hammers sat back and allowed Chelsea to control the game in the first half but the attackers weren’t able to create too many opportunities. However, Michail Antonio got enough space to exploit on the counter and could have scored on two occasions but was denied by the goalkeeper.

Despite having 72% of the possession, Chelsea did not look particularly threatening going forward and lacked that X-factor in their attack. Alvaro Morata, who came on in place of Olivier Giroud, could have broken the deadlock but Lukasz Fabianski produced a fine save from close range. However, West Ham arguably had the best chance of the game and could have sealed it right at the end had Andriy Yarmolenko managed to keep his header on target.

West Ham got their campaign back on track with a 3-1 victory over Everton last weekend and this draw means that the Hammers are heading in the right direction.

Chelsea player ratings

Kepa Arrizabalaga (7/10)

The Spaniard was a spectator for large quarters of the game but did well to deny Antonio from close range in the first half.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.5/10)

The Spaniard looked quite assured in possession and contributed to the attacking play with some overlapping runs. He had a decent game, barring a slip-up in the first half that allowed Felipe Anderson to launch a counter-attack.

David Luiz (6/10)

The Brazilian did not have much to do at the back but should have been better with his positioning and marking.

Antonio Rudiger (6.5/10)

Just like the other defenders, he did not have a busy day but looked quite good with his passing and made some good challenges.

Marcos Alonso (6.5/10)

The Spaniard did a good job getting forward and played some good crosses into the box but was caught out at the back by Michail Antonio’s pacy runs.

N’Golo Kante (7/10)

The Frenchman was the livewire in Chelsea’s midfield. He was everywhere; went into tackles and switched the play to link up with the other attackers in the final third. However, just like the other players, he lacked creativity.

Mateo Kovacic (6.5/10)

The Croatian did not make too many mistakes and kept the ball moving in the midfield with some accurate passing. However, that was all he did throughout the game.

Jorginho (6.5/10)

The new signing once again completed most of his passes in the midfield but didn’t show enough purpose.

Willian (7/10)

The Brazilian looked comfortable on the ball and tried his best to engineer something. He linked up well with Hazard and Giroud but lacked that final spark.

Eden Hazard (7/10)

Just like Willian, the Belgian tried his best to break down a resolute West Ham defence but it just wasn’t his day.

Olivier Giroud (6/10)

The Frenchman did not make any mistakes and played as the target man to link the play with Hazard and Willian. However, he was marked tightly by the centre-backs and he couldn’t get at the end of the crosses.

Substitutes

Gary Cahill (N/A)

Came on for Rudiger but wasn’t tested much by the opposition.

The English international added some spark to the attack and tested Fabianski with a strong long-range effort.

Alvaro Morata (5/10)

The Spaniard came on for Giroud and should have opened the scoring from close-range but failed to beat Fabianski.
