It was another difficult night for Liverpool in Europe as Jurgen Klopp’s men went down 2-1 to Paris Saint Germain at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 5 of the Champions League.
The Reds failed to get any sort of control over the game as PSG dictated terms right from the word go. Juan Bernat put the French champions in the driver’s seat just 13 minutes into the game, taking advantage of a poor clearance from Virgil van Dijk.
PSG doubled their advantage as Kylian Mbappe took advantage of some sloppy defending to set up Neymar for the second goal. Liverpool pulled one back just at the stroke of half-time, James Milner scoring from the spot after Sadio Mane was brought down at the edge of the box.
Liverpool didn’t create too many chances in the second half while PSG kept probing away. Marquinhos’ powerful header from a corner forced a brilliant reflex save from Alisson.
The defeat dealt a huge blow to Liverpool’s hopes of qualification to the knockout stages and even more so, as Napoli beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1.
The Reds will need to win their final group game against Napoli by a two-goal margin to have any chances of qualifying.
Made a sharp save to deny Angel Di Maria in the opening stages of the game and pulled off a wonderful reflex save to deny Marquinhos in the second half; could have done better with Bernat’s goal.
Looked like a square peg in a round hole playing in an unfamiliar right-back position. Did not do enough to close down the attackers for the opener and had a tough time dealing with Neymar. Booked.
Had a tough time like his fellow defenders at the back and was always under the cosh against a potent attacking unit.
His clumsy clearance led to the first goal; wayward with his headers and his performance at the back was anything but solid.
He was probably the pick of the backline for the Reds. didn’t quite get the chance to go forward and wreak havoc but did a fair job at the back barring a few occasions where he found himself exposed.
Struggled to get into the game and the foul on Neymar was probably his most noteworthy contribution. Saw a bit more of the ball in the second half but had no impact whatsoever.
Had a tough time dealing with Veratti and company in the midfield. Looked absolutely clueless against a world-class opposition and had very little impact on the game.
Kept his composure to score from the spot. Worked hard and won the ball a few times.
Earned the penalty with a powerful run down the left and got a bit more involved in the second half. Didn’t create any clear-cut chances.
Fired a shot wide of Buffon’s near post in the first half and looked a bit more lively in the second half but was closed down by the defenders.
Sent a decent header wide of the post and was barely involved in anything fruitful. Rightly Subbed off.
Booked. Made no impact.
Made little difference.
