Barbora Krejcikova Career
Barbora Krejcikova started playing tennis at the age of 6. She was a highly ranked junior tennis player. Krejčíková was ranked junior world No. 3 in October 2013. While in her junior years, Krejcikova won several titles like the girls’ doubles titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. She also managed to reach the final of the Australian Open. Notably, Krejcikova also won the European Junior Championship U18 in Klosters, Switzerland in singles and doubles.
After playing junior tennis for quite sometime, Krejcikova declared herself a pro in 2012.
In 2014, Krejcikova made her WTA Tour debut at the Gastein Ladies, doubles event. In singles, Krejcikova debut was at the Tournoi de Québec.
In 2015, Krejcikova couldn’t find much success in the singles events. However, in doubles, Krejcikova enjoyed considerable success. In doubles, she reached the semifinals at the Diamond Games, debuted in the main draw of the French Open, and won her first title at the Tournoi de Québec. Then in November 2015, Krejcikova won her first WTA 125K title at the Open de Limoges, with partner Mandy Minella.
In 2016, Krejcikova, in singles, mainly played on the ITF Circuit. However, she performed well while playing doubles. She reached the semifinals at the Auckland Open. Next, she debuted at the Australian Open, reaching the second round. Next, she played her first Premier final in doubles at the St. Petersburg Trophy. Finally, Krejcikova’s doubles breakthrough came at the French Open, where she reached the semifinals. This result ranked her in the top 50 for the first time, at No. 34. By the end of the 2016 season, Krejcikova entered the top 30 in rankings for the first time in her career.
In 2017, for the first few months, Krejčíková had success in singles on the ITF Circuit, but didn’t do well on the WTA Tour. After few qualification failures, Krejcikova suddenly, in late May, reached her first WTA singles final at the Nuremberg Cup. Sadly, she lost the finals against Kiki Bertens. Nevertheless, the result brought Krejcikova back to the top 150, for the first time since September 2015.
Also, in doubles, the first few months of 2017 were not really successful for Krejčíková. She failed to perform well at the Australian Open, the Sydney International, Taiwan Open and Hungarian Open. However, Krejcikova reached her first semifinal of 2017 at Morocco Open. Then at the Swedish Open, she reached the doubles final, but couldn’t win the title.
In 2018, Krejcikova couldn’t perform at the singles events. She unfortunately couldn’t qualify for many major events. On the other hand, Krejcikova had one of the most successful doubles season of her career. Krejcikova reached the final at the Shenzhen Open but lost the final against Irina-Camelia Begu/Simona Halep. Krejcikova finally won her first major doubles title at the 2018 French Open. Next, with her partner, Kateřina Siniaková, Krejcikova won the title at the 2018 Wimbledon. For her impressive results, on 22 October 2018, Krejčíková, together with her partner Siniaková, became world No. 1 doubles player. For her impressive performance, Krejčíková ended the year ranked then-world No. 65 in singles.
In doubles, Krejčíková started the 2020 season by winning the title in Shenzhen. Next, she played at Australian Open, where she reached the semifinals. At the same Australian Open, in the mixed doubles event, Krejčíková won a second consecutive title, this time with Nikola Mektić. In Dubai, Krejčíková reached the finals but lost to Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová. In the French Open, Krejčíková reached the semifinals. Finally, Krejčíková ended the 2020 season in Ostrava, where she made it to semifinals before Krejčíková had to withdraw.
In 2021, Krejčíková reached the doubles final at 2021 Australian Open but lost to Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka. Next, she won the mixed doubles for the third straight year at the 2021 Australian Open, with Rajeev Ram. In singles, Krejčíková reached the finals in Doha but lost to Garbiñe Muguruza. Her Doha results helped Krejčíková to crack the top 40 in singles for the first time.
At the 2021 Madrid Open, Krejčíková and Siniaková won the women’s doubles title. This was her biggest title win since 2018 Wimbledon. Finally, at Strasbourg, Krejčíková won her maiden singles title, defeating Sorana Cîrstea in the final.
Furthermore, at the 2021 French Open, Krejčíková beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in finals to win her first Grand Slam singles title. The win helped her enter the top 15 in singles for the first time in her career. In doubles, Krejčíková and Siniaková beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Iga Świątek in finals to claim their second French Open title. As a result, Krejčíková & Siniaková reclaimed the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, respectively.
Next, Krejčíková won the 2021 Prague Open. It was her third singles title in four tournaments played. At the Tokyo Olympics, Krejčíková & Siniaková won gold in the doubles event.
Then Krejčíková made her main draw singles debut at the 2021 US Open. She was defeated in the quarterfinals by Aryna Sabalenka. Notably, on 20 September 2021, Krejčíková reached a then-new-career high singles ranking of world No. 5.
