Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur collide once again after their epic semi-final clash last week at the Stockholm Open. This time they will be kickstarting their respective Basel Open campaigns.
Holger Rune
The 19-year-old is finishing 2022 in some style. He won his first title of the season at the BMW Open. In the same month, he made it to the Lyon Open semifinals. At the French Open, Rune produced his best result at a major thus far by reaching the quarterfinals. His form dipped considerably following the clay-court major as he lost 6 matches on the trot.
Rune’s fortunes changed for the better in October as he made it to the finals of the Sofia Open. He was the favorite going into his match against Marc-Andrea Huesler but the experienced Swiss managed to get the better of the youngster in straight sets. Rune did not let that loss hurt his momentum as he played some serious tennis en route to winning the Stockholm Open. He defeated world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas with a solid performance in the finals.
Alex de Minaur
The Australian tennis pro had a decent start to the season as he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. Since then, he has gone on to reach five semifinals. On four of those five occasions, he ended up on the losing side. However, he managed to progress beyond the semis and won the title at the Atlanta Open after defeating Jenson Brooksby in the finals.
Interestingly, the 23-year-old came up against Holger Rune in the recently concluded Stockholm Open. The former won the first set but Rune eventually got the better of him in a memorable semi-final encounter with the score being 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Holger Rune.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in straight sets.
