According to a report by The Star, Liverpool are set to receive £1million from Sheffield United for loaning in Ben Davies. The two clubs have reached an ‘agreement’ for the 26-year-old for a temporary spell at Bramall Lane this summer. His contract also includes a ‘promotion bonus’ in case the Blades return to the Premier League next year.
Davies joined the Reds from Preston North End for a £1.6million fee earlier this year. Coming through Preston’s academy, Davies had several loan spells at lower-division English sides before becoming a regular at Deepdale. But after the crisis of last season, is it wise for Liverpool to send him on loan? Liverpool have no need for Ben Davies
Davies’ signing continues to baffle Liverpool fans. He was signed at a time when Liverpool’s main centre-backs were out injured. As a way to ensure that the team has cover for the second half of the season, the Reds brought him in the winter transfer window alongside Schalke loanee, Ozan Kabak.

Despite the injury crisis at the club during that time, Jurgen Klopp did not hand a single minute to Davies throughout the campaign. In fact, with most centre-backs out injured for the club against Chelsea in March, Klopp used defensive midfielder, Fabinho, as a centre-back and didn’t even name Davies on the bench.
That shows where the German manager sees him in the pecking order at Anfield. Now, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez fit and raring to go, Davies would undoubtedly find it very difficult to get minutes at Liverpool. Moreover, the club has also brought in RB Leipzig’s talented defender, Ibrahima Konate, this summer.
Davies to Sheffield makes sense
Even if the club sees a repeat of the injury crisis they had last season, however unlikely that may be, then they still have Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to bring into the defence. Fabinho can play in that position as well, which only goes to show the impeccable depth the Reds possess in their backline.

So, heading out on loan seems like the ideal move for all parties. Davies would perhaps get more playing time at the Championship side- granted he joins them- and the Reds would incur a neat fee in return. If he impresses for the Blades, there is always the chance that he rises in Liverpool’s pecking order next year.

If he doesn’t manage to make a mark there, Liverpool would still have the proposed £1million fee with them and would know that they haven’t made the biggest financial blunder in the history of transfer windows. As of now, Davies is no way near the first-team picture and sending him out on loan would arguably be the correct decision.
