Everton Opinion: Why Everton should revive their interest in Marcos Rojo?
According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are willing to sell defender Marcos Rojo for £6million this summer.
The 29-year-old was limited to just six appearances for the Red Devils this season due to another injury-hit campaign. The Argentine, however, signed a contract extension last year which keeps him tied to Manchester United until 2021.
Marcos Rojo is out of favour at Old Trafford and his lack of fitness and game time has cost him his place in Argentina’s squad for this summer’s Copa America in Brazil. He will be allowed to leave this summer, as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning a rebuild at the club.
That being said, Everton must reignite their interest and sign Rojo from United this summer.
Back in July 2018, Everton were interested in signing Rojo but his wage demands apparently derailed the deal. They now have a chance to sign the Argentinean and Marco Silva should take a gamble on the defender.
The Toffees have made their first signing of the summer with the free transfer of Jonas Lossl. The Danish stopper was out of contract after two seasons with Huddersfield Town and the Merseyside outfit wasted little time snapping him up.
After signing Lossl, Marco Silva must now shore up his backline which looked shaky for large parts of this past season, despite the solid partnership of Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane. However, Zouma has returned to his parent club Chelsea after a season-long loan spell and is not expected to be at Everton next campaign.
Phil Jagielka will turn 37 in August and is on his last legs, while Yerry Mina had a start-stop debut season at Goodison Park. If Everton are to break into the top six next season, defensive reinforcements are vital over the summer.
Signing Rojo could solve Everton’s problems at the back, despite his career at United been marred by injuries. He has suffered a succession of injury setbacks after sustaining a serious anterior cruciate ligament rupture against Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-finals in April 2017.
That being said, however, the Argentina international is a strong and competent defender, whose biggest strength is his versatility. Rojo, who can play in central defence, left-back and as a left wing-back, excels in ball distribution. In addition, the former Sporting Lisbon man’s experience makes him an appealing target.

With Jagielka and Baines nearing the end of their careers, bringing in a player who can play at both centre-half and left-back could be handy for Silva.
Verdict
Signing Rojo will always be a risk due to his injury problems in the last couple of seasons, but if Silva can manage the Argentine well and keep him injury free, the Merseysiders may feel they’ve got a bargain.
