Liverpool report: The Reds thrash Southampton 4-0 at Anfield

Liverpool’s surge towards the Premier League title continued with a 4-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds were frustrated by the visitors in the first half and headed into the break all square but a goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain two minutes after the restart opened the floodgates. Skipper Jordan Henderson doubled their lead on the hour-mark before Mohamed Salah added a third and a fourth to increase Liverpool’s lead at the top to 22 points.

A good start to the game saw Southampton consistently looking to isolate both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, with ex-Red Danny Ings and Moussa Djenepo acting as the focal points of their attack. Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm as wayward passes consistently gave the Saints a reprieve.

Roberto Firmino had a penalty shout waved away, while Mohamed Salah and Gini Wijnaldum both saw their shots fail to test Alex McCarthy in a first-half with little to write home about for the hosts.

Controversy followed just after the break, with Ings firstly aggrieved over Fabinho‘s tackle in the box as he looked to have breezed his way through, with the Reds quickly progressing up the field with devastating effect and opening the scoring through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Soon Henderson doubled the lead for Jurgen Klopp’s side on the hour mark with his second goal in his last three appearances. The first two goals were assisted by Roberto Firmino before Henderson turned provider to set up Mohamed Salah to put the gloss on a win. Firmino then made it a hat trick of assists by setting up Salah for his second and Liverpool’s fourth of the afternoon in the extra-time.
