Deemo is primarily a score-based music video game. Every song that may be played has three major levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Each level is rated according to its degree of difficulty using a ‘Level’ scale. The initial range of the levels was from 1 to 10, but with the addition of the Level 11 song Myosotis in the 2.0 edition and the Level 12 song Marigold in the 3.0 version, the range of the levels has been extended to include 1 to 12.

There is also an unlockable “Expert” difficulty option for a few chosen songs, where the level number may be replaced with letters. The story of the game revolves around Alice, a little child who falls through an open trapdoor in the sky, and Deemo, a strange black creature. Deemo helps Alice return to her home world by playing piano music, which encourages the growth of a unique tree sapling that is emerging from the piano.
