Best Starter in Pokemon Legends Arceus

Published by

Find out the best starter Pokemon for your adventure in Pokemon Legends Arceus in our guide. Cyndaquil, Rowlett or Oshawott?

The concept of a starter Pokemon has remained unchanged in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. As is customary, a Pokemon professor will give you your first Pokemon. For most people, their starting Pokemon becomes their constant companion throughout their Pokemon adventure, so picking the proper one is crucial.

When it comes to starters, Legends is unique in one important way: all three starters are Pokemon we’ve seen previously. In fact, three of the starters have been in previous games in the series. As a result, we know a little bit more about them than we usually do when we start a new Pokemon game.

Best Starter in Pokemon Legends Arceus

It’s worth noting that each of the three starters have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. All three starter Pokemon have been given new evolved forms due to the legend of the Hisui region, where Pokemon Legends: Arceus takes place. Trainers are aiming for their last evolutionary stage, therefore they should try to know as much as they can about these Pokemon.

Although there is no objectively “best starter” in the game, there are times when each player’s strengths can shine. Hisuian Decidueye, a Grass and Fighting-type Pokemon, is Rowlet’s last evolution. Hisuian Typhlosion, a Fire and Ghost-type Pokemon will evolve from Cyndaquil. Hisuian Samurott, a Water and Dark-type Pokemon is Oshawatt’s last form.

Rowlet in Pokemon Legends Arceus

Rowlett

Rowlet has two types when it first debuts, Grass and Flying, whereas the other two Pokemon only have one type. This gives you a tiny advantage early on, but its eventual Grass/Fighting-type isn’t very effective against any of the Noble Pokemon.

Although Hisuian Decidueye is weak against six kinds and powerful against six others, its moveset can fill in some of the gaps. However, if you want a leg up on early Noble Pokemon, you should pick a different Pokemon.

Advantages: Decent matchup against many Noble Pokemon

Disadvantages: Has the overall worst typing defensively and offensively and has the lowest speed stat among the starters

Cyndaquil in Pokemon Legends Arceus

Cyndaquil

One of the main reasons to choose Cyndaquil as a starting is that there aren’t many Fire types in the early stages of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, so having one on your squad as soon as possible is a good idea. Cyndaquil evolves into Hisuian Typhlosion, a Fire/Ghost-type with certain advantages over common types like Grass and Ground, but a lot of disadvantages.

Electric, Poison, Fighting, and Ground Pokemon fill out the rest of your team. In the end, Cyndaquil is a terrific pick, especially early in the game, but he may struggle in Pokemon Legends Arceus’ latter stages, especially if you have other powerful Fire-type alternatives.

Advantages: Highest base stat total at their final evolutions and Highest speed stat among the starters

Disadvantages: Has the worst matchup against most Noble Pokemon

Oshawott in Pokemon Legends Arceus

Oshawott

Oshawott is a Pokemon that evolves to be powerful but it’s a little tricky at the start. It’s a Water-type with low defensive numbers at first, which makes it difficult to appreciate, at least at first. However, it compensates for this with a strong Attack and a high Special Attack — and all of the strongest Water attacks are Special Attacks anyway. Despite having a low Speed, it has a high HP.

If you pick Oshawott, it will ultimately evolve into the powerful Hisuian Samurott, a Dark/Water Pokemon with a comprehensive set of powers that can handle a wide range of situations.

Advantages: Has the most balanced typing and stats and Great matchup against most Noble Pokemon

Disadvantages: Overall lowest base stat total

After playing the game, we discovered that Oshawott is the strongest of the three starters, owing to its type advantage over the region’s Noble Pokemon, particularly Kleavor. Even if it struggles against Noble Hisuian Lilligant, you will most likely have acquired another Pokemon that can easily counter it by that stage. Because it is a powerful special attacker, Hisuian Samurott is an excellent pick for the end-game phase. It will be a powerful asset in battle if it can develop a moveset of Water and Dark-type attacks to help it. In the end, it is up to the player and their preferred playstyle to make the selection.
