Bessie Regina Norris who was better known by her stage name Betty Wright was an American soul and R&B singer, and songwriter. Wright rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as “Clean Up Woman” and “Tonight Is the Night”.
Wright began her professional career at the age of two when her siblings formed the Echoes of Joy, a gospel group. Wright contributed to vocals on the group’s first album, released in 1956. Wright and her siblings performed together until 1965 when she was 11 years old.
She releases her debut studio album My First Time Around was released in 1968 at just the age of 14 and her first hit single “Girls Can’t Do What the Guys Do”. In 1970, while still in high school when she was at the age of 16.
Betty would continue to release many albums including 2011’s Betty Wright: The Movie – with The Roots which reached #27 on the US R&B chart. Wright’s single “Clean Up Woman” reached #2 on the US R&B chart and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2016 Wright was featured in the song “Holy Key” by DJ Khaled featuring Kendrick Lamar and Big Sean. She provided vocals for songs by Jennifer Lopez, David Byrne, Lil Wayne and Gloria Estefan, to name a few.
Betty’s songs were sampled by many artists, including Mary J. Blige, Tupac, Slim Thug, Beyonce and Chance the Rapper. In 2017, Wright was honoured with the National R&B Music Society Unsung Heroine Award at their Black Tie Gala & Awards Ceremony in Philadelphia, Pa.
Her last appearance was on the TV show Unsung on April 5, 2020, which was a month before her death. Paul Anthony and Bowlegged Lou of Full Force presented the award to her.
Betty Wright’s Family and Personal Life
Betty was born on December 21, 1953, in Miami Florida, U.S to her parents Rosa Akins Braddy Wright and her second husband McArthur Norris. She was the youngest of seven siblings she had.
Unfortunately, Betty died from cancer on May 10, 2020, at her home in Miami, aged 66. Her niece first announced the news of her death.
Wright was married three times. In 1976, Wright married Jerome McCray and together they had a daughter. Wright and McCray divorced in 1981. Wright was married to Patrick Parker from 1982 until 1983 and together they had two children.
Wright was married to Jamaican musician Noel Williams, better known as King Sporty, from 1985 until he died in 2015. Together Wright and Williams had two children.
In another tragic incident, her son Patrick Parker Jr. was killed on Christmas Day in 2005 in a shooting incident.
