Bournemouth’s capture of Scottish attacker Matt Ritchie this summer could take them to the next level
Bournemouth endured another one of their usual seasons under Eddie Howe, as the Cherries finished 12th last season. Until now, they have neither overachieved nor underachieved.
However, in recent times, Bournemouth have certainly made progress. In fact, they successfully managed to nail their spot as one of the mainstays in the middle of the table.
Now, Howe must gear up for the start of the new season after the World Cup in Russia. The ongoing transfer window will be a crucial period for the club but they are yet to get their business started.
The Cherries have been linked with Newcastle United midfielder Matt Ritchie over the last few days. The 28-year-old spent three years at Bournemouth, before making the move to St. James’ park. He enjoyed a successful spell with the south coast outfit, making 130 appearances for the club. He also scored a total of 31 goals in the process.
Ritchie is known for his ability to play a wide number of roles. He can play either as a wing-back or as the central attacking midfielder.
The talented Scotsman made a total 35 appearances for Newcastle last season, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists in the process. He possesses a beast of a left foot, capable of producing the most thunderous of shots. Ritchie is also an excellent passer, having taken all set-pieces for the Magpies in the previous campaign.
And the results were out there for all to see as Newcastle scored a number of goals from corners and free kicks last season. The player is quite adept at circulating the ball in the midfield and can provide ample support behind the striker. His versatility as a midfielder is what makes him so appealing to a number of clubs.
Bournemouth are reportedly looking for a swap deal with the Magpies, with striker Josh King offered to Newcastle for Matt Ritchie. It remains to be seen whether this exact deal will pan out, but it would be a win-win for both clubs.
Ritchie and Howe have worked together before and a return to the Cherries would surely prove to be a successful one. However, Bournemouth might have to pay a higher fee to bring Ritchie back but it will be a great long-term investment from their side.
