Why Bournemouth should offer Dan Gosling a contract extension

According to Sky Sports, Bournemouth midfielder Dan Gosling has admitted that he wants to finish his career with the club.

Despite not being a necessarily first-choice in the side, the 30-year-old has proved to be a reliable customer for Eddie Howe’s side over the past couple of years. Having joined Bournemouth in 2014 following an unsuccessful four-year spell at Newcastle United, Gosling has gone on to feature 166 times across all competitions for the Cherries.

Gosling, who is spending his sixth year at the Vitality Stadium has, so far, scored 19 goals and given eight assists, with the highlight of his career happening in the 2014-15 season.

The seasoned campaigner in his maiden season with the Cherries helped them secure their first-ever promotion to the Premier League and has since then been a key player for the side.

Though the Cherries have managed to stay in the top-flight since earning promotion five years back, it has not been the best of seasons for them this time. Bournemouth are currently fighting for their survival in the league, and are in the relegation zone, sitting in the 18th spot.

Meanwhile, Gosling has made 16 league appearances, after missing a few games early on due to a hip injury.

Despite turning 30 this February, Gosling has still contributed to his side with two goals and one assist, making him a key part of Eddie Howe’s plans. However, with his contract with set to expire next year, Gosling now wishes to finish his career at the club.

Gosling offers Bournemouth experience and versatility

Bournemouth have as many as seven midfielders in their ranks. However, veteran Gosling can offer the side something which the rest of them cannot. He is one of the few senior players in the Cherries midfield with the other being 33-year-old Andrew Surman.

However, Surman is a shadow of his former self and has made just five league appearances this term, giving an indication that he is clearly not in Howe’s plans for the future. Gosling, on the other hand, is a veteran of 176 Premier League appearances and has vast experience under his belt.

Despite having touched thirties Gosling is still going strong – something which is evident from Howe’s team selection.

He has played in 16 of their last 18 league matches, making it evident that he is clearly in Howe’s plans. Moreover, a utility player, Gosling’s versatility offers Howe plenty of options as per the team’s requirements.

Predominantly a central midfielder, Gosling is comfortable playing in a defensive role and can also function as a right back. That said, and with the player expressing his love for the club, Bournemouth should indeed hand their reliable man Gosling a new contract.

Verdict

Bournemouth do not have many experienced midfielders in their mix. And having one such as Gosling would be handy during difficult spells. Moreover, he is still in his prime and looks like he has plenty left to offer. He has been a loyal servant of the club for almost six years. And, Bournemouth should, hence, offer him a new deal.
