Teddy Atlas isn’t particularly interested in the idea of a third fight between Canelo Alvarez and GGG
It was announced earlier today that boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez will face GGG again in what will be their third fight. Boxing trainer, analyst, and aficionado, Teddy Atlas wasn’t thrilled by the announcement, suggesting that Canelo Alvarez should be fighting David Benavidez.
The Mexican boxer is coming off a decision loss to Dmitry Bivol in a lopsided contest. It looked like Canelo bit off more than he could chew, in a rather underwhelming display. While announcing the fight Canelo said that a victory against GGG will open the doors for a rematch against Bivol, who’s his ultimate target currently.
65-year-old Teddy Atlas discussed Alvarez’s future plans on his podcast The Fight, alongside co-host Ken Rideout. Atlas revealed that he wasn’t particularly fascinated by the match-up, and instead, he would rather see Alvarez face David Benavidez later this year.
“Again, if he wants to consolidate all the belts at 168 [pounds], it goes through Benavidez at this point. I’ve said this before when it was easier to say than today, I’ve said this months, and months, and months ago. He’s the guy who represented the most danger to Canelo, nobody else. Nobody else in that division.”
Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping was a busy man on Twitter yesterday between interacting with fans, latest news, and the trilogy fight between Canelo and GGG.
Bisping was mighty impressed by Canelo’s resilience and work ethic to bounce back from the adversity he faced in his last fight. Starting with GGG, Canelo is determined to embark on a path of resurgence, to finally land his shot at a rematch against Dmitry Bivol.
Reacting to the news on Twitter, the ‘Count’ said, ‘Gotta respect the work ethic of canelo. Recently loses and jumps straight back into another massive fight.’
