Acclaimed boxing reporter Dan Rafael details why the trilogy bout between GGG and Canelo Alvarez should have fans excited

Two of boxing’s top billings GGG and Canelo Alvarez are all set to lock horns for the third chapter of their historic bout. On Friday, Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin set sights on each other for the first time since 2018, ahead of their trilogy bout on Sept. 17. Canelo will defend his undisputed super-middleweight titles at T-Mobile Arena on 17th September, later this year.

The news of the fight had boxing community divided- while some believe that the third chapter in the fight books was destined to happen, others believe that Canelo should be fighting other worthy contenders rather. Boxing trainer, analyst, and aficionado, Teddy Atlas wasn’t thrilled by the announcement, suggesting that Canelo Alvarez should be fighting David Benavidez.

During the presser earlier today, both fighters took center stage, as soon as they walked up, staring and sizing each other up. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife, while fans of the sport gasped in awe of the historic rivalry they were watching unfold.

When both guys walked to their respective seats to begin the press conference, Alvarez didn’t mince words, as he launched his first verbal assault on GGG.

“He pretends to be a nice guy, but he’s not. He’s an a—hole,” Alvarez said.

Golovkin resorted to his calm self, and did not engage in a banter with the Mexican.

“I respect him a lot,” Golovkin said through an interpreter. “As for him saying it’s personal, I really don’t understand what he’s talking about because after the second fight, we shake hands. I believe we put everything behind us back then. If he says he has still has something against me, it’s his problem, not mine.”

Reputed boxing reporter and former ESPN corresponder Dan Rafael reacted to the presser and the match-up in general on Twitter. He believes that every boxing fan should be excited about the prospect of this fight, and foresees a war when they finally meet each other in September.

Fans react to the first press conference of the trilogy bout between Canelo Alvarez and GGG

Fans of the sport were severely critical of Canelo Alvarez’s antics before the fight- some suggesting that the Mexican has to live with the bitter truth that GGG probably had already beat him in the previous two bouts.

Others cuffed at Canelo for learning the English language, however using it for all the wrong reasons. Here are some of the fan reactions from the presser yesterday.
