Following back-to-back Performances of The Night against Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar, Ortega faced Max Holloway for the featherweight championship. But, he was defeated by means of TKO due to a doctor stoppage.
Ortega went on a lengthy injury layoff and was away from the sport for almost 2 years, before making a winning comeback against Chan Sung Jung in October 2020.
