According to a report from Expressen via Sports Witness (h/t Brighton and Hove Independent), Brighton & Hove Albion are interested in £5.1m-rated Union Berlin striker Sebastian Andersson, having scouted him on multiple occasions this season.
The 28-year-old Andersson came through the youth ranks at Swedish club Angelholm. He made 53 first-team appearances for the club, bagging 19 goals. He joined Kalmar in January 2012 where he scored 8 goals in 62 games, before signing for Djurgarden in July 2014. The striker featured 40 times for the club, scoring 18 goals and then joined Norrkoping in March 2016.
After 64 appearances, in which he netted 28 times, Andersson moved to Germany joining FC Kaiserslautern. The centre-forward featured 30 times for the club, scoring 12 goals, before being picked up by Union Berlin in 2018. Till date, he has racked up 70 appearances for the German capital club, producing a return of 26 goals and 10 assists.
Brighton have had an ordinary campaign under Graham Potter. The Seagulls are sitting just two points above the relegation zone. Goals, or lack thereof, have been a major problem for Brighton over the course of the 2019/20 term. They have netted just 32 goals in the Premier League this term, with very few teams scoring fewer than that.
The Seagulls strengthened their attack last summer with the signing of Neal Maupay. While the new arrival has impressed with 8 goals, there is a clear lack of quality backup and support for the former Brentford ace. Glenn Murray is in the tail-end of his career and has managed just one goal, while Aaron Connolly has mostly been used out wide.
Hence, it is necessary for Brighton to bolster their centre-forward department heading into the summer transfer window. Having said that, Sebastian Andersson would be a viable option for the Seagulls.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed a solid season upon Union Berlin’s return to Bundesliga, after having helped them win promotion at the end of last term. So far in 2019/20, the Swedish striker has scored 13 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions, while also contributing with three assists.
Furthermore, he has done well for the Swedish national team as well, bagging three goals in nine matches. An experienced professional who has been in good form over the last couple of seasons, Andersson would add more quality and depth to the Brighton frontline.
Brighton have struggled to score consistently in the Premier League this season. Apart from Neal Maupay, none of the strikers has done well enough. Thus, signing a new centre-forward should be a top priority for the Seagulls ahead of next season.
To that end, Union Berlin’s Sebastian Andersson would be a good signing. His arrival would add more firepower, as well as depth to the Seagulls attack.
