Engines

Right from engines to technology, Pontiac Star Chief hit the bullseye. It was built on GM A-body platform with the inline-8 engines and carter carburetor. The transmission options were 3-speed manual and 4-speed hydra-matic automatic. When we speak about the top speed and horsepower, these were not higher like other models. As it was a full-sized sedan, the top speed was limited to 95mph. It was a true straight-eight premium model from Pontiac.
Features and Technology
The features of the first-generation Pontiac Star Chief were advanced. In the 50s, the vehicle had features like AC, Radio, clock, power steering, and refrigerator. Core features were chrome accents, wide bench seats, vinyl, analog gauges, and steering wheel. The vehicle was available in body styles like Sedan, Catalina Hardtop, and Convertible.

Commercially Successful
When the Pontiac Star Chief was unveiled in 1954, it made great sales with over 1.1L units. In the following 3 years, it sold around 4.5lakh units. Before the next generation Star Chief arrived, the first-generation made total sales around 5.5 lakh units. The commercial success led to more production units.
Ultra Comfort Vehicle
The Pontiac Star Chief was not just a sedan, it had comfort features as well. As it was built with advanced tech, the vehicle offered a smooth and comfortable ride as well. Built with luxury features, bench seats, strong engines, and soft suspension, passengers experienced a great ride. Though the vehicle didn’t deliver mass torque and horsepower, it was partly durable. The endurance was good for rides within the city. Star Chief was not made for rough roads and mountains.
Expensive
The first-generation Star Chief was expensive. It was sold for around $2,500 USD. In the 50s, this was high pricing, but people were fond of the designs and bought it as it was a sedan. The original Pontiac Star Chief cars are now available in collector markets. The price of these starts around $30,000 USD.
