Cameron Heyward attended Peachtree Ridge High School in Georgio. Playing for the Lions, he totalled over 100 tackles and 16 sacks in his senior year and also tied for the state championship. He was a scholar-athlete with a GPA of 3.2, earning a full ride to Ohio State University.

Heyward did not take long to impress for the Buckeyes, being named Freshman All-American. He totalled 162 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and one interception during his college career. He led his team to a berth in the Allstate 2011 Sugar Bowl and beat the Arkansas Razorbacks 31–26. There was nothing stopping him from going in the first round and he did with the Pittsburgh Steelers, his hometown NFL side.

The Pennsylvania-native was the seventh defensive end in his draft class in 2011. The Steelers handed him his debut against the Baltimore Ravens. Heyward finished his rookie season with 11 combined tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a pass deflection, and he blocked a field goal in 16 games. By his second season, he was competing with Ziggy Hood for the weakside defensive position but ended up losing that battle. In 2014, the Steelers exercised a fifth-year option on his contract before handing him the $59.25 million extensions a year later.
