The experienced veteran Simona Halep will face the promising youngster Coco Gauff in a quarter-final clash at the Canadian Open 2022.
The 18-year-old Coco Gauff is one of the most talented youngsters on the WTA circuit. She couldn’t progress beyond the quarter-final stage at Montreal last year. Gauff had a great run at Rolland Garros this year as she reached the finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. She is coming into the Canadian Open tournament on the back of a quarter-final appearance at the Silicon Valley Classic.
Gauff began her campaign with a comfortable win over compatriot Madison Brengle. Gauff had to pull out all the stops against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the second round. The American tennis pro eventually won the match in three sets. Another stern test awaited Gauff in the round of 16 as she faced the experienced Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian played well but eventually, Gauff edged her out in a closely-contested three-set affair.
2-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep started her season as a singles player on a great note winning the Melbourne Summer Series 1 having dropped just one set throughout the tournament. She has made it to five semi-finals since then but a title has eluded her.
The 30-year-old has looked at ease during her wins in the first three matches at Montreal against Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai, and Jil Teichmann. Halep hasn’t dropped a set as yet.
Simona Halep and Coco Gauff have locked horns on three previous instances. The experienced campaigner has won all three matches.
Coco Gauff would have to bring her A-game to topple Halep.
Prediction: We are predicting a win for Simona Halep in three sets.
