Only three matches are left before the champion of the women’s event in the Canadian Open 2022 is crowned. Simona Halep will take on Jessica Pegula in what promises to be a mouth-watering contest.
Jessica Pegula
The 28-year-old has won 3 doubles titles this year but a singles title has eluded her. Her best result in a singles event in 2022 came at the Madrid Open where she made it through to the final before being toppled by Ons Jabeur. Last year, Pegula couldn’t make it beyond the semi-final stage at Montreal as she lost to Camila Giorgi.
At this year’s event, she avenged her loss in the round of 16 as she defeated Camila Giorgi 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. In the first round, she defeated compatriot Asia Muhammad. In the quarterfinals, she outclassed Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3.
Simona Halep
The two-time Grand Slam champion won the Melbourne Summer Series 1 in January but has not progressed beyond the semi-final stage since then. Simona Halep has reached the semi-final stage in five tournaments this year prior to the Canadian Open but has failed to go beyond each time.
The 30-year-old has performed exceedingly well in the competition thus far. She is yet to drop a set. Halep began her campaign with a win over Donna Vekic. Comfortable wins against Zhang Shuai and Jil Teichmann followed. In the quarter-final, Halep faced 2022 French Open finalist Coco Gauff. A lot was expected from the youngster but the veteran showed her class and won the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Head-to-Head and Prediction
Jessica Pegula and Simona Halep will be facing each other for the very first time.
Simona Halep is expected to win the match in straight sets.
