Nick Kyrgios is in the middle of a dream run. Alex de Minaur is next in line to attempt to break the flow of compatriot Kyrgios in the round of 16 of the Canadian Open 2022.
The 27-year-old Nick Kyrgios has won 14 out of his last 15 matches. He is also on an 8-match winning streak. Kyrgios has been operating on a different level as of late. He reached the final of the Wimbledon Championships before being ousted by Novak Djokovic. At the Atlanta Open, Kyrgios took part in the doubles event and won the title alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kyrgios won both the singles and men’s doubles events at the Citi Open.
At the Canadian Open, Kyrgios has continued his rich vein of form. He began the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Argentine Sebastian Baez. Next up was world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The Russian won the first set in a tiebreak but Kyrgios showed great intent in the following couple to win the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-2.
The talented Spaniard has already bettered his last year’s campaign at Montreal. He was ousted in the round of 32 by Nikoloz Basilashvili. The 23-year-old won both his matches in straight sets so far in the tournament but he has had to work very hard during both of them. He defeated Denis Shapalov in the first match 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Grigor Dimitrov was his opponent in the next round and the Australian won the match 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
Alex de Minaur won the Atlanta Open last month and was expected to go deep in the following Citi Open as well. However, he bowed out in the first round itself following a defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 2-6.
Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios have not faced each other before so the head-to-head rests at 0-0.
It’s hard to bet against Nick Kyrgios for this match. However, De Minaur might push the match to the third set. A victory in three sets seems to be on the card for Kyrgios.
