The talented Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz was ousted in the Round of 16 of the Wimbledon Championships. He lost to world No. 10 Jannik Sinner in a four-set affair.
Carlos Alcaraz is touted as a great talent who has the potential to win many Grand Slam titles in the future. We have seen him mesmerize the tennis world every now and then. He is just 19 years old and has already won five titles after turning pro in 2018.
This year, he made it to the quarter-final of the French Open and won the Rio Open, Miami Open, Barcelona Open, and the Madrid Open. His form has been exemplary and at the upcoming US Open competition, he would be upbeat about winning his first Grand Slam title.
A freakish coincidence has happened this year, involving the youngster. All five players who defeated Alcaraz in 2022 have gone on to get injured soon after.
Who are the five players who have beaten Carlos Alcaraz in 2022?
Carlos Alcaraz has been in sublime form this year, but he has hit roadblocks and suffered defeats at the hands of some excellent players.
Matteo Berrettini
Alcaraz suffered his first loss of the year in the third round of the Australian Open. He was defeated by Matteo Berrettini. The Italian pulled out of the Miami Open due to an injury to his right hand. The 26-year-old returned at the Stuttgart Open and won the competition.
Rafael Nadal
Alcaraz took his second L of the year in the semi-final of the Indian Wells Masters against his idol Rafael Nadal. The former world No. 1 suffered a rib injury during the match. However, the warrior played the final which he lost to Taylor Fritz after putting in a valiant effort. Nadal returned after recovering from the injury and played in the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. However, success eluded him until the French Open came by. The 36-year-old won his 22nd Grand Slam and 14th at Roland Garros. Nadal suffered another injury during the quarter-final match at Wimbledon against Taylor Fritz. He is currently on the road to recovery and will hope to be back ahead of the upcoming US Open.
Sebastian Korda
The next player that defeated Alcaraz was the American Sebastian Korda. The 22-year-old defeated the Spaniard in a three-set thriller in the Round of 32 of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Korda pulled out of the recently-concluded Wimbledon competition as he was dealing with “terrible shin splints” and “beaten up feet”.
Alexander Zverev
The German Alexander Zverev was the next one to get one over Alcaraz. The current world No. 2 achieved the feat in the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros. The 25-year-old won the match in four sets to progress to the semi-final. However, after a great start to the match against the eventual-champion Nadal, Zverev lost the plot and during the last point of the 12th game of the second set, he suffered a terrible ankle injury. He had torn all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle. Zverev missed Wimbledon and it seems highly unlikely that he would recover in time for the US Open which begins on August 29.
Jannik Sinner
Alcaraz went down fighting against the promising Italian Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon. Sinner won the match in four sets. He went on to face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final and won the first two sets. However, the veteran pulled up his socks and produced a dominant display in the following three sets to win the five-set thriller. Sinner announced recently that he will not compete in the upcoming ATP 500 in Hamburg. He rolled his ankle during the match against the Serbian legend and it seems that he has not yet recovered fully. The 20-year-old stated that this is more of a precautionary move so that he does not aggravate the injury.
