Carlos Rodon has accumulated just under $20 million in career earnings through his contracts in the MLB. His yearly salary in 2021 alone was $3 million but he started out with just $463,128 back in 2014. His highest salary after a season was $4.2 million, in 2019. Rodon’s high draft selection and professional attitude has made him a highly sought-after pitcher.
Rodon attended Holly Springs High School in North Carolina and was selected in the 16th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He decided to forego the contract offer and play for North Carolina University. Three years later, he was selected third overall in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Rodon had earned a spot in USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team and played for the Arizona League White Sox. He made his MLB debut in 2015, striking out Lonnie Chisenhall, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up 2 runs and walking 3 batters. He recorded his first start and first win against the Cincinnati Reds at US Cellular Field where he gave up two runs in six innings on four hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.
Unfortunately, Rodon got placed on the disabled list in July 2016 due to a left wrist sprain. He was only able to start 12 games the next year and finished with a 2-5 win-loss record in 69 1⁄3 innings. In May 2019, he underwent the Tommy John surgery and missed the remainder of the season. Difficulties in remaining fit forced the White Sox to place Rodon on the non-tethered list on 2 December 2020. He signed a one-year contract for 2021.
His career moment came in April of that year when Rodon no-hit the Cleveland Indians 8-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field. He almost had a perfect game, retiring the first 25 batters. Roberto Pérez got hit by a pitch. Rodon hit seven strikeouts and threw 75 of 114 pitches. He earned his first All-Star appearance after the 2021 campaign, along with teammates Tim Anderson, Liam Hendriks, and Lance Lynn.
