Earlier on Thursday, Ferrari confirmed that Carlos Sainz will drive for the team until 2024 after extending his contract with the Italian manufacturer.
Carlos Sainz has finally extended his deal with Ferrari. The Spanish driver signed a two-year contract extension with the team, Ferrari announced on Thursday.
Earlier this week, reports had claimed that Sainz and Ferrari had been disputing over a contract extension for the 27-year-old. Sainz had wanted a two-year extension with Ferrari but the team were reportedly prepared to offer him a one-year contract.
However, it seems that Ferrari and Sainz have come to an agreement that the driver will stay with the Scuderia until 2024. He joined the Maranello outfit in 2021, replacing Sebastian Vettel. Sainz had previously raced for F1 teams Toro Rosso and McLaren before joining Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz signs new contract extension with Ferrari: How has Sainz’s journey been so far in 2022
Carlos Sainz is currently 3rd in the 2022 Drivers’ Standings, only behind teammate Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell. Sainz is 38 points behind leader Leclerc but Ferrari are still leading the Constructors’ championship this year.
In the opening race of the 2022 season in Bahrain, Sainz finished second as Ferrari grabbed a 1-2 finish. In Saudi Arabia, he finished on the podium once again, taking third place. However, Sainz had a disastrous outing in Australia as he failed to finish the race after a torrid qualifying session.
But ahead of the Emilia-Romagna GP, Sainz will be full of confidence now that he has committed his future at Ferrari. Sainz has competed in 143 races so far in his career but is yet to get a win in Formula 1.
