Wentz played college football for North Dakota State University from 2011 to 2015. As a redshirt freshman in 2012, Wentz finished the season completing 12-of-16 pass attempts for 144 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Wentz became a starting quarterback in his junior year, that is, 2014. Wentz started all 16 games in 2014, completing 228 of 358 passes for 3,111 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also had 642 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

In 2015, Wentz led North Dakota State University to its fifth straight FCS title. Also, he was named the NCAA Division I-AA Championship Game Most Outstanding Player for the second straight year.

On April 28, 2016, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Wentz 2nd overall in the Round 1 of the 2016 NFL Draft. On May 12, 2016, Wentz signed a four-year deal worth $26.67 million, fully guaranteed, including a $17.6 million signing bonus.
