Earlier on Friday, reports confirmed that Xavien Howard agreed to a blockbuster $50 million contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.
The Miami Dolphins’ eventful offseason just got a lot more interesting. The AFC East division side have made history by making Xavien Howard the best-paid cornerback in the NFL.
This staggering contract extension comes only a year after Howard requested a trade away from Miami over contract disputes. However, Howard’s patience seems to have paid off tremendously as the 28-year-old is now expected to make a small fortune with his new deal.
Xavien Howard contract extension: How much will the Dolphins CB earn?
On Friday, reports claimed that Howard signed a new five-year deal with the Dolpins that will guarantee him a whopping $51,691,177 in new money. Howard had three years remaining on his previous deal. But the Dolphins have now ripped apart that deal and offered him a mouthwatering five-year contract.
Multiple reports suggest that Howard will earn a mammoth $90 million over five years in Miami, at an average of $19 million per year. He can make another $5 million in upside. The deal will make Howard the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
The three-time Pro Bowler had previously been signed to the Dolphins on a team friendly deal. He was the 36th overall pick at the 2016 NFL Draft. But his patience with the team seems to have eventually paid off, quite literally.
Howard led the NFL in interceptions twice, which included his career-high of 10 picks in 2020. He also led the NFL with 20 passes defensed that season. Last season, Howard tallied five interceptions, 16 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns.
