Two strikers Celtic can target in the summer window
Celtic are on course for another successful season in the domestic circuit, having already won the Scottish League Cup, being eight points ahead in the title race and are in the last eight of the Scottish Cup. The only chink in their progress has been the poor show in European competitions.
While the Champions League was a disappointment early on, a meek show in the Europa League last-32 tie against Valencia proved that the Hoops are still lacking when it comes to games against continental teams.
Their defence has been solid in the league games but they need reinforcement in those areas – partly because of Dedryck Boyata’s contract expiry and Filip Benkovic’s insistence on returning to Leicester once his loan spell ends in May.
But the situation at the other end of the pitch needs surgery as well. Odsonne Edouard is the only striker who can play for them on a regular basis. Other than that, Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah are in the squad on loan moves from other clubs while Leigh Griffiths has been out due to personal implications.
Hence, signing a striker on a permanent deal should be in Celtic’s agenda come the summer transfer window. Here are the two options they can target:
Che Adams
The Championship marksman with Birmingham has had an unbelievable season so far, resulting in him being linked with several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Everton. (h/t Liverpool Echo) The 22-year-old has scored 21 goals and supplied three assists in 33 appearances this season.
Celtic could get a gem of a player at such a young age if they sign him in the summer window. Having done so well in a physically demanding league like the Championship, Adams shouldn’t have much problem settling in the Scottish league.
Tammy Abraham
Abraham is currently playing for Aston Villa in the Championship, on loan from Chelsea, and has had a terrific season. He has scored 20 goals in 28 appearances and led the line in the best possible manner at Villa Park.
Even though the Blues have been hit by a transfer ban, which may mean they would want to keep the 21-year-old for the next season. But, from what we have witnessed from the club, it doesn’t look likely that they would keep Abraham. Celtic should test the player’s resolve by making a good offer and then bringing him to the Parkhead.
