Celtic were interested in Mexican defender Edson Alvarez last summer and according to a report from the Scotsman, the Glasgow giants are still interested in signing him.
Edson Alvarez, 21, who played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has also attracted the interests of Inter Milan, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, the report claims. The 21-year-old has been with Mexican side America since 2014, scoring five goals in 100 appearances.
Now that the young Mexican has attracted a lot of interest from European clubs, Celtic must show their ambition and pluck him away from his native when the transfer window re-opens.
It makes complete sense for the Hoops to be in the market for a new defender this summer. Dedryck Boyata is arguably Celtic’s best defender but he is likely to depart Parkhead when his contract expires at the end of the season. Leicester City are already interested in landing Boyata on a free transfer and the Belgian defender could be tempted to reunite with his old boss, Brendan Rodgers, at the King Power Stadium.
Also, Filip Benkovic will return to his parent club Leicester this summer and Marvin Compper is likely to be released after failing to prove his fitness since joining from the Bundesliga last year. Thus, to avoid a potential burnout of options the Hoops are going to need a few new centre-backs and someone as young and promising as Edson Alvarez really would be a step in the right direction.
A product of the America youth academy, Alvarez enjoyed his breakthrough in the 2016/17 season. Since then, he has been a regular fixture in the Mexican side’s backline and has impressed with his all-action displays. Regardless of being just 21, he has amassed 100 appearances for his club 22 caps for the national team which tells one of his maturity and quality.
Predominantly a centre-back, the Mexican is equally adept at playing at right-back or as a defensive midfielder. Alvarez is strong in the air and has a giant leap which makes him an asset on both ends of the pitch. He is also incredibly calm on the ball and is capable of driving into the opposition half.
The young gun has outstanding technical abilities and that combined with his versatility and experience make him a definition of a modern-day defender.
Celtic faces a tough battle on their hands in the pursuit of Edson Alvarez but they should beat the likes of Inter, Ajax and PSV for his signature.

The Mexican defender has massive potential in him which can be fulfilled with a move to the Parkhead and with him still being 21, the Hoops would have a brilliant defender on their hands for the next decade.
