According to a report by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are eyeing a January reunion with Victor Wanyama, who is currently out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur.
In fact, ex-England international Danny Mills has warned the Scottish giants to brace themselves for a transfer battle, as per Football Insider (h/t The Scottish Sun). Having made just 3 appearances this season so far, the midfielder has been warming the benches too long at White Hart Lane and it is high time for him to seek an exit and play more often.
As things stand, Tottenham have undergone a lot of changes lately. The north Londoners parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino after five long years and appointed Jose Mourinho as his replacement.
The Portuguese tactician steered Tottenham to a 3-2 win against city rivals West Ham United in his first match in charge. While it remains to be seen if the former Manchester United manager can finally help Spurs lift a trophy, Wanyama must leave the club in the mid-season trading period.
The Kenyan joined Celtic back in 2011 and enjoyed an illustrious spell at Parkhead before moving to Southampton for a fee of £12million under then-manager Pochettino.
Shortly after, the Argentine boss joined Tottenham and Wanyama followed him to White Hart Lane. With a new manager at the helm, the 28-year-old would be wise to return to his former hunting ground. Having made 91 appearances during his two years with Celtic, Wanyama would be capable of resurrecting his career – and winning trophies – under Neil Lennon.
A defensive midfielder by trade, Wanyama was more often than not under Mousa Dembele’s shadow at Tottenham. Once Dembele departed from the club, Wanyama was afforded more chances by Pochettino. But the fact that he has played just 24 minutes so far this season does sound alarming for a player who is just 28.
After training and playing for a high-octane manager like Pochettino for so long, Wanyama certainly has the tools needed to succeed at Parkhead once again.
As far as Celtic are concerned, they are facing strong competition from arch-rivals Rangers for the top spot in the standings. Although they have a pretty strong squad, Lennon could utilize an experienced campaigner like Wanyama, who has already proven his mettle in a Celtic shirt. Thus, the Bhoys would be wise to beat off competition and sign the 28-year-old in January.
