Celtic FC Opinion: Why the Hoops should go all out to sign Mark Diemers?

According to Belgian news organisation Walfoot, Celtic are interested in signing Fortuna Sittard midfielder Mark Diemers.

Mark Diemers, 25, contributed with seven goals and as many assists in 34 games, as Fortuna Sittard narrowly avoided relegation from the Eredivisie. He was one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing season for the Dutch club.

And the Dutch midfielder’s performances has seen Scottish champions Celtic take an interest in securing his services, although the Hoops will face competition from a number of Eredivisie clubs and Bundesliga side Freiburg, the report adds.

Celtic completed the historic treble ‘Treble’ last season under Neil Lennon, who was later appointed as the permanent manager of the club. Lennon returned to Parkhead to replace Brendan Rodgers on an interim basis and the team’s performances under him prompted the Hoops board to appoint him permanently.

The new Celtic boss will look to improve his squad to compete on all fronts next season. While the Bhoys will be keen to retain the title, an improved showing in Europe will be very much in Lennon’s plans.

As far as reinforcements go, finding a backup or successor for Scott Brown has to be on the top of the Northern Irishman’s priority list. Plus, Olivier Ntcham could be on his way out of Parkhead this summer, amidst interest from FC Porto and Marseille. To that end, someone like Mark Diemers would be a welcome addition to Celtic’s ranks this summer.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Diemers can play anywhere across the midfield and come up with consistent performances. He is a good passer of the ball, adept at linking up with his teammates and possesses the vision to set up his teammates with regular opportunities. The Dutchman has the knack of getting in the box to score goals, making him such a handful for the opposition defenders.

Diemers works tirelessly off the ball and would really fit into Lennon’s system, bringing balance in central midfield. He still has two years still to run on his contract though so Fortuna Sittard will be expecting a significant fee the player they signed from De Graafschap only a year ago.

Verdict

Diemers is a quality player who can walk into the Hoops’ line-up without much fuss. Therefore, Neil Lennon’s Celtic shouldn’t hesitate to splash the cash on him.
