Why signing Kaio Jorge is a step in the right direction by Chelsea

According to German publication Kicker (h/t Express), Chelsea have expressed an interest in Santos centre-forward Kaio Jorge. Touted to be a future star, the 18-year-old has featured six times for Santos since joining them as a ten-year-old in 2012.

One of the brightest prospects from South America, Jorge, dubbed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo. put in eye-catching displays for his national side Brazil in the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Jorge scored five goals in the competition, including one in the final against Mexico and was awarded the Bronze Boot as Brazil emerged eventual champions. To date, he has played 11 matches for the U-17 side and has 7 goals and 2 assists to his name, speaking volumes about his talent.

His impressive goal-scoring form in front of the goal for Brazil, saw the youngster being offered three games in the top-flight league in 2019. Young Jorge was also included most recently in Santos’ two games in the 2020 Copa Libertadores tournament, where he racked up one goal.

With the teenage sensation growing in stature and his performances improving with time, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has now shown an interest in him. However, the youngster won’t be available for cheap as he has a £69m release clause in his current contract with Santos.

Jorge could be an excellent signing for the future by Chelsea

Chelsea had to rely on the side’s youngsters and academy talents mostly this season due to a transfer ban. However, they still managed to climb to fourth this season. Lampard’s decision to rely on his side’s youngsters bore fruits as academy players such as Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have delivered the goods, becoming key players in the Chelsea line-up.

However, with the transfer window around the corner, Lampard he needs to bring new faces into the squad if Chelsea are to stay on top in the long run. That said, the Blues’ interest in teenager Jorge makes complete sense, even though they are close to signing German ace Timo Werner.

Jorge can also ease the goalscoring burden on top-scorer Abraham, who has scored 13 league goals for them this term. He also fits the mould of young talents that Lampard has hugely relied on this season as he builds a team for the future. Hence, Chelsea’s decision to make a move for Jorge would be a step in the right direction.

Abraham has been doing the most of scoring for Chelsea this season and roping in an upcoming talent like Jorge will offer Chelsea enough backup in their ranks. Moreover, he is still in his teens and can develop further under the guidance of Lampard. Thus, he could prove to be an excellent signing by Chelsea with an eye on the future.
