Why Chelsea must make a move for Matias Vecino in the summer

According to Daily Express, Chelsea are interested in signing midfielder Matias Vecino in the summer and are happy to meet Inter Milan’s £23million asking price for their player.

Matias Vecino, 28, has been in and out of Inter boss Antonio Conte’s starting XI this season. He has made 17 Serie A appearances for Inter this season, scoring twice and providing two assists. The report claims Antonio Conte is looking to cash in on the Uruguayan international in order to accumulate funds for his own transfer kitty.

Chelsea failed to sign any players in January despite having their transfer ban lifted. The Blues currently lie 4th in the table and considering they didn’t sign any players in the last two transfer windows coupled with Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid last summer, Frank Lampard has done a commendable job at the club.

However, Chelsea have already started planning for next season by signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. The Moroccan playmaker is set to move to Stamford Bridge after the end of the 2019/20 season, subject to personal terms being agreed. While Ziyech will add value to Lampard’s attacking ranks, having produced 8 goals and 21 assists in 29 matches across all competitions this season, the Blues must add substance in the middle of the park.

Jorginho has been a consistent performer in midfield under Lampard, but the Italian has received very little support from the likes of N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is yet to play this season, having been out since May with a ruptured Achilles. This makes the signing of a central midfielder very important for the Blues and they are doing the right thing by going for Vecino.

Vecino has spent much of his professional career in Italy after departing Nacional to join Fiorentina back in 2013. He then had two successful loans with Cagliari and Empoli before completing a permanent move to the San Siro in 2017. The 28-year-old has made 91 appearances across all competitions for Inter, scoring 11 goals.

An experienced player, the Uruguay international is an all-action midfielder who can play both attacking and defensive roles in the middle of the park. There’s no doubt the 28-year-old would be a useful addition to the Blues considering his experience.

Verdict

Lampard has steered Chelsea to fourth place in his debut campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge while also navigating the club through a tricky-looking Champions League group. Having already announced the signing of Ziyech, the Blues would be wise to invest on an experienced Serie A midfielder like Vecino.
