According to reputed football journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are open to letting Victor Moses leave on loan to Spartak Moscow. The winger has not featured for Chelsea since 2019 and recently returned from his loan spell at Inter Milan, who refused to take him for another stint.
The 29-year-old Nigerian right-midfielder started his youth career at Crystal Palace in 2001 and after progressing through the ranks, he was promoted to the senior team in 2008. After 69 games in two years, he went on to join Wigan. Another two seasons later, Chelsea signed him.
While he featured heavily in the first season at the club, he was loaned out to Liverpool in his second season. Two more loan spells followed at Stoke City and West Ham. It was only in 2016 when Antonio Conte joined the club that Moses was recalled to the starting XI. A change of formation with Moses as wing-back worked wonders and for two years, he was an undisputed starter.
It all changed with Maurizio Sarri. Moses found game time hard to come by and left for Fenerbahce on loan. Another loan spell followed at Inter Milan and currently, he is back at Chelsea. He has 128 appearances for Chelsea with 18 goals and 13 assists (source – Transfermarkt).
Although Moses played for England at youth level, he switched allegiance to Nigeria at senior level and has 38 appearances and 12 goals for them so far.
Victor Moses has not put on the blue jersey of Chelsea in one and half seasons. The club is also doing well without him. This begs the question whether Moses is really needed at Chelsea. With so many new recruits, Chelsea have an oversized squad at this point. They need to get players off their books to balance it.
The wide player could be one of those to make way. With the club no longer employing a back-three formation with wing-backs, Moses does not have a place in the team. He plays best as a wing-back.
It’s not to say Moses has done badly since leaving Chelsea. In fact, he has fared well for Fenerbahce and Inter Milan. However, it is clear that he is not a part of Frank Lampard’s plans and a loan deal works for both Chelsea and Victor Moses.
