Reports circulating that Chelsea have made a shock £53m offer to hijack Manchester City-bound Jorginho from Napoli. The Brazil-born Italian is currently one of the hottest properties in this transfer window, with these two giant clubs facing off to sign him.
With PSG interested in getting N’Golo Kante from Stamford Bridge, there is a massive chance that the Blues may need a new defensive midfielder next season. For that reason, attempting to sign Jorginho makes sense. City were probably buying the 26-year-old to deputise or back Fernandinho up, but Chelsea might offer him a regular starting role.
Let us take an in-depth look at the player and try to analyse why the Blues need him more than the current Premier League champions:
Jorginho is currently one of the best ball-playing defensive midfielders around Europe. His passing from deeper positions, mixed with his capability to deliver incisive through balls is impeccable. The 26-year-old had a pass success rate of 89.5%, having also possessed a key pass average of 1.5 per game in the Serie A last season.
The midfielder has a great sense of match awareness as he can read games, intercept through balls and also make crucial tackles to break up the opposition attack. He demonstrated a tackle and interception rate of 1.9 and 1.5 per game respectively.
Talking about Chelsea, Jorginho can easily fit in as a defensive midfielder, probably with more qualities on the ball. He can play in various systems as he is predominantly comfortable in playing as a sole defensive midfielder and controlling the game from there on. The 26-year-old exhibits stamina to cover the ground when procured to support the front men.
The managerial situation at Chelsea remains unsolved, however, having a player like Jorginho will be a universal dream for any boss. So, the Blues shouldn’t dwell on issues and look to sign players of the highest quality to get back into title contention.
The Italian should also think twice before going to the Etihad, as he will be well-contested by Fernandinho. At Stamford Bridge though, with Kante’s future in doubt, he can get a guaranteed starting spot from the start of the season.
