Why Chelsea should avoid Mauricio Pochettino and give Sarri more time
The Manchester Evening News has reported that Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. While the Blues did sign Maurizio Sarri over the summer, recent performances have seen them struggle to make an impact with many fans believing that Sarri’s time is already over.
Maurizio Sarri has had his fair share of struggles this season and Chelsea currently sit in 4th position but are seven points behind third-placed Tottenham. This among many other reasons has seen Mauricio Pochettino linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, and while the move would be a great fit, it’s one that doesn’t make sense given that Sarri only arrived in summer.
Pochettino has shown his class at Tottenham and even now despite not signing a single player in two transfer windows, they still have an outside chance of winning the Premier League title this season.
The Argentine’s brilliant work in North London has led to an interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and now Chelsea. For Chelsea however, they will face a fight if they are really interested in the 46-year-old but to do that first, they need to convince the Argentine that his job would be safe if he can’t make an impression within the first six months.
Because given the Blues’ history, their managers don’t last more than three seasons, with Claudio Ranieri’s four-year tenure being the longest since Roman Abramovich took over. Signing Maurizio Sarri was arguably the best choice Chelsea made over the summer after the Italian’s brand of attacking football with Napoli had lit up the Serie A. That was more than enough to convince the Chelsea board that Sarri would be ideal to replace Antonio Conte.
However, the Premier League is a different animal as compared to Serie A and thus it’s no surprise that Sarri has struggled of late after a blistering start to the season. The 60-year-old needs time to re-adjust his tactics but so far, while Chelsea does sit fourth and are well out of the Premier League title race with 13 games to go, making a move for Mauricio Pochettino would make no sense.
While in all likelihood Pochettino will potentially give them what they want, sacking Maurizio Sarri so early in his tenure at the club will further tarnish Chelsea’s reputation. The 60-year-old arrived amidst the promise of stability and a chance to change their style of play, so why not give him a chance?
