Chelsea Opinion: Blues should try to bring in Luka Jovic to solve their No.9 woes
According to Football London, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has dropped a huge hint about his transfer plans in the summer, with the Italian boss admitting that he has been keeping close tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic with a view to a potential transfer at the end of the season.
The Blues overcame Slavia Prague to set up a semi-final showdown with Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League and Sarri is well aware of the damage that Jovic can cause to his team.
The 21-year-old Serbian international has netted 8 goals in the competition and few would back against him adding to that tally when Frankfurt lock horns with Chelsea.
Jovic has been in scintillating form for Frankfurt this season and has emerged as one of the most sought-after young strikers in Europe. The Serb has accumulated a staggering 25 goals and 7 assists from 41 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit in all competitions and it is no surprise to see his stocks soar sky high.
The Blues have been slapped with a two-window transfer ban, though they are still waiting for the verdict of the appeal and expect to have the ban lifted or postponed.
They have continued to monitor potential targets ahead of the summer transfer window and Sarri has not hesitated to go public with his interest in Luka Jovic.
To put things into perspective, the acquisition of Luka Jovic would do Chelsea a world of good and solve the club’s No.9 woes. The lack of a prolific centre-forward in the ranks has been a key talking point at Stamford Bridge in Sarri’s first season and Jovic’s arrival would help the Blues improve massively in the final third.
Chelsea shipped out the underperforming Alvaro Morata out on loan and brought in Gonzalo Higuain to add more firepower to their attack. That, however, hasn’t worked in favour of Chelsea.
The Argentine international has failed to deliver the goods consistently and has looked quite pedestrian with his movement in the final third. Higuain was a raging success at Napoli under Sarri but the 31-year-old has not been able to relive his glory days after reuniting with his former manager.
Olivier Giroud has scored 10 goals in the Europa League and has added a lot of value to the team with his expert hold-up play but the Blues still need an in-form striker like Jovic to challenge for the Premier League title.
They can, of course, use Tammy Abraham and Mitchy Batshuayi, both of whom have excelled on loan at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, but Jovic can take them to a completely different level.
The Serb’s poaching instincts and opportunistic nature in front of goal combined with his clinical finishing with both feet and supreme aerial ability have earned him the status of a bonafide goalscorer in Europe.
He also has the ability to link up with his teammates, often performing subtle flick-ons and clever lay-offs to exploit the gaps and create chances.

Having recently made his loan move from Benfica permanent, Frankfurt would be in a strong negotiating position if Chelsea do come calling for Jovic in the summer. The Bundesliga club are unlikely to let him depart on the cheap but the Blues should use their financial muscle to test their resolve.
