The 28-year-old Eugenie Bouchard takes on India’s Karman Kaur Thandi in the round of 16 of the Chennai Open on Wednesday.
The Canadian tennis pro underwent shoulder surgery and missed a lot of action in 2021. She has made her return and is still a bit rusty but will slowly get back into form the more she plays. At the recently-concluded US Open, she won her first qualifying match against Yuki Naito before losing the second match against Linda Noskova.
Bouchard faced Joanne Zuger of Switzerland in the first round of the Chennai Open on Monday and won the match 7-5, 6-2. The former World No. 5 took a 4-1 lead in the first set after losing the opening game of the match. However, she “lost focus” and allowed Zuger to come within touching distance of winning the set. In the end, Bouchard will be happy with the fact that she ended the match in straight sets.
The 24-year-old won an ITF title in India in June after defeating Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas in the final. Kamran Kaur Thandi came into the tournament after losing her first qualifying match at the Granby National Bank Championships.
The Indian youngster lost the first set of her first-round match against Chloe Paquet. She came back strongly to win the next two sets and stun the No. 8 seed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, so the head-to-head stands at 0-0 as of now.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to win in straight sets.
