The former World No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard takes on Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the quarterfinals of the Chennai Open 2022 on Friday.
The 2014 Wimbledon finalist is just playing her third tournament since returning from a shoulder injury that needed arthroscopic surgery.
Bouchard has not been at her best as yet. She has won 3 matches and lost 2 since her comeback at the WTA 125K event in Vancouver. So far in the Chennai Open, Bouchard has managed to defeat Switzerland’s Joanne Zuger and India’s Karman Kaur Thandi in the first couple of rounds. Against Zuger, Bouchard won 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 while against Thandi, she won 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). The matches will get tougher from hereon but the Canadian star will know that the more time she spends on the court, the better she will get.
The 25-year-old Nadia Podoroska made it to the finals of an ITF event in Spain in August. She also reached the semifinals in two ITF events this year in Netherlands and Germany.
After being ousted in the first round of the US Open, Podoroska began her Chennai Open campaign on a positive note. She defeated Kyoka Okamura in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, the youngster pulled off an upset as she knocked out the experienced Tatjana Maria after losing the first set.
The head-to-head stands at 0-0 for now as Eugenie Bouchard and Nadia Podoroska have not faced each other before.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to win in three sets.
